Chris Hill: Valerie, I'm interested in this topic as well. I teach ESL and use Facebook to communicate upcoming activities to students in the American Language Program. I use Twitter to communicate with colleagues about teaching and technology. But I'm not sure how to deal with situations in which these worlds start encroaching on each other (colleagues friend me on Facebook or are put off by Facebook updates to students in my Twitter stream, for example). I'm curious to know if / how others deal with these kinds of dilemmas. Also, how aware students are of these dilemmas and how they might approach them. Chris
Liv Gjestvang: Valerie and Chris, I am also really interested in this discussion. I have used Facebook for a long time to connect with friends and family and have struggled to navigate the shift of this network to include professional connections. How do we define the lines between professional and personal use of social networks? Is this even possible? Students seem most interested in social networks as tools for personal connection, not as a way to connect with professors or University departments. Will this shift as they move from school to work? Also, I am curious to hear about how (and if) people maintain a meaningful presence in so many networks (Facebook, twitter, blogs, listservs, digg, delicious, etc.) and still get anything done!
Lauren Angelone: I think this is a very interesting question and have been meeting it head on as I work in a government agency with many "experienced" people that are less experienced in technology. Now, they would like to try social media in the work place, which I think it's great, except for the fact that my personal life is on facebook, twitter and others.

Chris Hill posted Introductions
Hi, I'm Chris, the Unconference Chair. Please use the discussion to introduce yourself to the other participants, even if you already know them.
Scott Merrill: Aloha. I'm Scott. As a systems engineer in the department of Mechanical Engineering, I need to stay one step ahead of the faculty with respect to emerging education technology. I'm eager to learn what works (and what doesn't) for other departments on campus, as well as to share my own experiences to date.
Lorrie McAllister: Hello, I'm Lorrie. I work at the Knowlton School of Architecture --I oversee the development of the KSA Digital Library and have been project manager for the School's Open Education initiative. Related to this, I've been working on lecture capture, developing infrastructure and a related set of web tools.
Beth Black: Hello! I'm Beth - a systems librarian and head of the Web Implementation Team in the OSU Libraries IT Division. Things on my mind now are: implementation of SilverStripe content management system with our new web site design, rolling-out the Carmen Library Link campus wide to integrate library resources into Carmen courses, and improvements to the Knowledge Bank. I'm also interested in collaborative work across departments and university units.
